The combination of moisture, humidity, and a non-sterile soil mix can lead to fungal growth. Some plants (like thyme and oregano) are susceptible to this fungal growth known as damping off disease. Once fungus starts to grow on the soil and the stems, it will spread on the soil and eventually kill seedlings.
I just started my own herb plant box at home and found this video extremely useful so I wanted to share this you.
Apparently, one effective way to combat fungal growth is to use cinnamon! Yup! Cinnamon, the same spice that we sprinkle on cakes and teas.
Cinnamon has anti-fungal properties that resist fungal growth and helps protect seedlings. Just a pinch of cinnamon sprinkled on the soil will keep fungus from growing. It’s a nice tip to keep handy once you start planting your favorite herbs and seedlings. That’s one more reason to love cinnamon!
